Ocimum tenuiflorum (also tulsi, tulas?, or Holy Basil) is an aromatic plant commonly used in Ayurveda. Recent studies suggest that tulsi may be a COX-2 inhibitor, like many modern painkillers. One study showed Tulsi to be an effective treatment for diabetes by reducing blood glucose levels. The same study showed significant reduction in total cholesterol levels with tulsi. Tulsi has been used for thousands of years in Ayurveda for its diverse healing properties.
As administrator of Ayurveda Sangeeta I wanted to get a good feel as to what she wanted for her site and her background. Here is a brief synopsis of a conversation with her about this.

Sangeeta, an Ayurveda practitioner and owner/author of Sangeeta Ayurveda, has a background of Mathematics, English Literature and Applied Economics. In earlier years she worked in very high profile multinational companies in various top management positions. In spite of her background, she has preferred to choose her own way of attaining knowledge. To her, what was better than studying and gaining knowledge of Ayurveda?
She believes that ‘degrees on paper’ is an aspect that is required only to pave the path of career at a certain point of life. The other aspect that she believes in and has faith in is ‘deep knowledge and experience’; whether or not you have a degree is immaterial. She stresses the fact that attaining knowledge and experience in real life is far better than restricted bookish knowledge. She does not give much value to degrees as they hold no meaning after a certain stage of life. Instead she gives value to knowledge and experience; as she feels that these can come handy at any point of life, and stay with a person the rest of their life.
Anyway, as I was saying, she gave up her established business career 15 years ago and became totally involved in learning all aspects of Ayurveda. Since then, she has been practicing this ‘science of life’, this ‘philosophy of living’, putting her heart and soul in it. To her, Ayurveda was a hobby that turned out to be a knowledgeable and a real learning experience.
As she doesn’t believes in degrees, she has become a self-practitioner of Ayurveda and will keep on delving in this science of Ayurveda as long as she lives. She has helped many with her treatments and counseling, and finds great solace when she sees her recovered patients, some who never believed there was a solution to their problem or condition.
This love of Ayurveda has made her finally decide to put up this site. Being very down-to-earth, simple, humble and wise person at that, she says frankly, “I don’t want to keep this knowledge bottled up inside me with an arrogant attitude of ‘I know everything and won’t share it with anyone, or I am all knowledgeable and no one knows more than me’. I have started late and before I vanish from this world, I want to share with the world everything I know about Ayurveda.”
She went on, “Yes, I could have written many books and sold them if money was the only motivation for me to learn this science. I want the world to know that herbs have tremendous miraculous power to heal if used at the right time in the right doses.”
Sangeeta hopes that the world listens to her and tries to take this aspect of science more seriously. She hopes that they don’t just try to turn the science of Ayurveda into a money-making enterprise by wrongly combining the herbs and selling them, only to gain some momentary or materialistic pleasure.
She has an earnest request to everyone – before going for Ayurvedic treatments; you should know about the herbs so that when you read the ‘herbs used’ in any medicine, you would know exactly what each herb is used for and which part of the disease it would cater to. This way, you will have the justification and authority to decide on your own whether you will buy the medicine or not. Do not go by hearsay or recommendations from people who have never tried it and end up buying the wrong combination of ingredients for your particular condition.
With so much to cope and contend with, Sangeeta still finds some free time to devote to helping students from all over the world with their ‘academic writing’ projects. She is an expert writer and is very knowledgeable in many subjects, but at the same time, she confesses that Engineering and Technology are not her forte at all.
